AI and Machine Learning: Definitions and Distinctions

What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

AI is often confused with Machine Learning (ML), which is a subset of AI. While AI refers to the computers’ ability to think and act like humans, Machine Learning (ML) is the application of algorithms on data sets to generate predictions or insights. Machine Learning models are ‘trained’ to do specific tasks such as recognizing words or faces, or predicting customer’s purchases. AI, on the other hand, takes this a step further by providing the machines with the ability to detect patterns and make decisions on their own.

Machine Learning (ML) is a subset of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that focuses on the development of algorithms and systems capable of ‘learning’ from existing data and making predictions or decisions without being explicitly programmed. ML algorithms use mathematical models derived from existing data sets (training data) to make inferences, detect patterns and correlations, classify, and forecast future outcomes.

How AI and Machine Learning Influence Each Other

In a nutshell, Machine Learning is a subset of Artificial Intelligence and the two are deeply intertwined. Machine Learning makes use of existing data in order to make predictions while AI enables machines to understand and interpret the data in order to make decisions. The two technologies are used in conjunction to improve accuracy and performance of predictive and decision-making models, as well as to create autonomous robotic systems capable of executing complex tasks.

AI and Machine Learning are being used across a wide range of applications and industries to automate and improve the accuracy of decision-making systems, as well as predictive analytics. In healthcare, AI and ML can be used to diagnose diseases more accurately, identify anomalies in medical images, and develop personalized care plans. In finance, AI and ML algorithms are used to analyze and detect suspicious financial activities, as well as to predict stock market movements. AI and ML are also used in automotive applications such as self-driving cars and pedestrian detection.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are two closely related technologies that have revolutionized the way in which machines can interact with humans. AI aims to replicate the behavior of humans, while ML focuses on data analysis and prediction. Together, AI and ML can be used to automate and improve a wide range of applications and industries, from healthcare to finance to automotive. AI and ML are already being used in practice, with even more applications expected to be developed in the coming years.
